"There is nothing political in American Literature." -Laura Bush
What does that quote first make you think of?
An author?
A teacher?
A glass of wine and a front porch?
Song lyrics?
A wadded-up copy of The Jungle with a yellow
"used" sticker on the spine and three kinds
of highlighter throughout?
Did words on a page ever activate you?

For whatever reason, it conjures up an old quote for me.
Gertrude Stein while speaking of her home town of Oakland, CA she said, “There is no ‘there’ there.”

Of course, many years later Oakland responded by adding the single word “THERE” to its official city flag. So that the entire world would now know that there is now a there there.

The idea that there is nothing political in American Literature is a way of trying to sell the “There” to the rest of the world, hopefully ignoring the lack of a “there” that is happening all around you.

Laura is trying to ignore the negative press and the tomes of liberal thought created by American authors.

Really, could you continue living like she does and acknowledge the masses of political works that speak so strongly against her lifestyle?

“Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain” is what that quote makes me think about.

Oh, and “Look over there! What’s that? (yoink)”

    You know, just first impression.
