So besides the now famous dove commercial that exposes the misconceptions of beauty (if you haven’t seen it click here) I have begun to see more of these “magical” Photoshop videos come out on the web. I have used photoshop for years but mostly for web page illustrations and the like. I have done very little in the way of digital photo editing, but these guys are truly amazing…

Should we strive to make the industry try to be more realistic in what true beauty actually looks like? Should I feel especially bad for trying to learn how to do some of these tricks? So, anyone else care to comment.

My first reaction to this is that art is art. We need to learn to differentiate the difference between real life and art. I am using the term art loosely to encompass anything man made for the most part. This includes TV ads, marketing spreads, photography, painting, et cetera.

I know that when I watch a movie with a murder scene that the action isn’t real. It is fake. I understand that. When I look at a photo in a magazine, even if it is supposedly real, I assume that it has been futzed with a bit.

Now, a couple of the photos in the video seem like they are “senior” pictures or something similar. Personally, I am not down with having my life chronicled in a untrue fashion. Although, there may have been some touch ups done to my senior photos aka airbrushing out a zit. That somehow seems different in that my face isn’t being rearranged.

I bet this debate goes back hundreds of years. I can imagine a wealthy patron telling his portrait artist to repaint something because the painting is too true to real life and unflattering.

i’m not sure if i should write anything about this or not…

suffice to say i am constantly amazed by new design and graphics work produced by photoshop masters.

    is it art? dunno.

i’d need a pitcher of beer and an appropriately dark dive bar to really get into the debate of that one.

seems like i’ve been arguing one way or another about this topic since childhood, and for some reason, there’s never a conclusion. so i guess i’ll leave it at that.

This hits a little close to home for me, so i’ll let it speak for itself.

I don’t have a problem with retouching and the “magic” of making images. Personally, I don’t look at a magazine and think that I should look like that on a daily basis. I really think that when most women compare themselves to other women (and this is the base of the argument against this sort of thing, is it not?) they compare themselves to women they come into contact with daily. I don’t think most women think they should look like a magazine cover. Certainly, putting these special effects out in the open is important so there is a level of knowledge about it.

There is a show on TLC or something where they take an ordinary woman and transform her into a magazine cover via all these tricks. It’s super interesting and makes you realize that practically anyone can be the base of this.

This is just humans creating beauty, which we’ve done for thousands of years, whatever the means. I’m glad there’s something more beautiful in the world for me to look at.
