So Obama has been in office for a little while now. I am curious what your impressions are of his presidency thus far.
As for me, I’ll keep my thoughts to one main topic – his leadership style especially in regards to the economic stimulus package (ESP). Overall, Obama has a very hands-on approach to solving our nations problems. He is even willing to sacrific his “beliefs” for bi-partisan spirit and general inclusiveness.
I applaud these efforts, but I worry. In general, Republicans play a smart and dangerous version of politics. Their collective showing on the ESP has been awe inspiring. Republicans make a good team. They play to win. Their initial united lack of support for the ESP was as if 40 dwarves netted a giant. Republican’s know they can’t take Obama down in one swift tug. It is going to take consistant and strategic effort. They netted a giant and they weakened him. Not too bad, but a little. Nate Silver writes about this in In Declining Approval Ratings, Lessons for Obama.
Ultimately, Obama’s hands-on and conciliatory style of leadership will define a new style of politics. It will also open up newer and smarter solutions to our problems. Gone will be the era of Reagan’s hallowed voice screaming that the solution to all economic and foreign problems are tax breaks and a strong military. In will come Obama’s vision of collective bargaining and smart solutions.
For Obama’s vision for the future to prevail he needs to play a little rougher with the Republicans. They have him netted and will continue wear him out. Unless he plays a little rougher and shakes a few Republican off, they will tie his ass to the ground and dance all over him.
